A re-imagining of a certain scene from “Saiyuki,” in a way that can be applied to myself and my roomies. Remember, this manga format reads from the top right to the top left, not left to right as English comics are usually presented!
Also, whiteboard images that went up sometime after I hung the “Saiyuki” challenge:
This is generally what happens to my whiteboard doodlings – they get added to, redone, or made into bad puns. It’s a growing process over a length of time. Also, it is awesome.
Liz saw the last whiteboard version (“NaNo Dying”), and immediately exclaimed, “Harry Potter reference for the win!” This confused me, since I thought I was making a clever reference to a certain “Something Positive” comic. Liz’s eyes sort of glazed over and she explained patiently that J.K. Rowling once joked that at the end of HP book 7, rocks would fall and all would die.
I suppose I smiled and nodded, my own eyes glazing over. Later, while searching the interwebs for the One True Source of the quote “rocks fall, everyone dies,” I discovered… that no one really knew. It’s been a part of gaming for a long time, though, so I assume that the GMs of old are ultimately to blame for the idea, if not the exact phrasing of “rocks fall.”
I was unable to find a date for J.K. Rowling’s utterance, so I can’t secretly gloat that “Something Positive” used it first (May 3rd, 2002). But, y’know? In the immortal words of S*P’s Choo-Choo Bear: “Meh.”
So much for updating Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I don’t know how webcomics peoples do it. Really. I’m going to die when I actually start trying out “Cathy, Queen of Evil.” Maybe I can find an artist willing to share credit? (But then what’s the point of all the doodling and constant cartooning practice?)
In any case. The door posters and Writing Workshop posters are nearly finished, but not much else besides poetry has come out of my pen these days. I’m loath to present more of my semi-poetic ramblings, though, so howzabout an example of whiteboard doodling? I do these every couple days on the whiteboard hanging on my wall. It allows me a quick creative outlet with the control of a pen but the erasability of a pencil. In other words, it’s a near-perfect medium for me, especially as busy as I am.
One of my favorites:
It’s a fake Facebook News Feed! I was still sick with my cold and badly wanted to use the punchline “I’m blowing my brains out.” Everything else just sort of grew up around it: Kris Straub is always sexy, Neil Gaiman had just posted several pictures of himself with giant pandas (my favorite animal), and I had just bought “Heroes” Season 1. I never got to watch the Season 2 premiere, btw. I’m not done w/ the first season, and on top of that, I have tutoring for the one hour that “Heroes” is on Monday nights. Figures.
